Paul Ehrlich in Rome - welcoming a false prophet to the Vatican

February 27, 2017 -- "The invitation to Paul Ehrlich to speak at the 'Biological Extinction' conference, hosted by the Pontifical Academies of Science and Social Science, constitutes a major scandal" said Professor Roberto de Mattei of the Lepanto Foundation. "Under Pope Francis" he continued "the Vatican has given a platform to a defender of abortion and a declared enemy of the Catholic Church and the natural law."

Paul Ehrlich is one of the best known advocates of neo-malthusian theories. In 1968 he published his bestselling book The Population Bomb, in which he predicted that population growth would lead to the deaths of hundreds of millions of people by starvation in the 1970s, including 65 million Americans. In reality, the population of the earth has doubled since 1968 without any of the catastrophic consequences predicted by Ehrlich occurring.

However, despite his predictions being thoroughly discredited, Ehrlich continues to peddle the myth of overpopulation, even to the extent of defending forced abortion and mass compulsory sterilization as means of population control. In a 2011 interview Ehrlich defended sex-selective abortion, stating that "it would be a good idea to let people have their choice so that they could have fewer children and could have what they wanted." He suggested that it may be better for girls to be aborted because "You can be aborted as a conceptus, you can be killed at birth, or you can be sold into slavery and die in a slum someplace. It would be interesting to know how many females you're keeping out of hideous situations – the ones who are not killed or infanticided but nonetheless not valued."

A petition of over 10,000 names was sent to Pope Francis asking him to prevent Ehrlich's participation in the Vatican conference. "Thousands called on Pope Francis to ensure that a leading proponent of abortion and sterilization was not given a platform in the Vatican, but Ehrlich's speech has taken place nonetheless. The pro-life and pro-family movement is deeply concerned about the openness of Vatican authorities to positions that are harmful to life and the family. These are not purely academic questions: the lives and wellbeing of real children are at stake " said Maria Madise of Voice of the Family.

"Over the last few years defenders of life and family have tried to give Pope Francis the benefit of the doubt but every new scandal raises further questions about the motivations of those who now hold key positions of power in Rome." said John-Henry Westen of LifeSiteNews.com.  "In an interview with our news service Ehrlich told us he was 'thrilled' with the direction Pope Francis is taking the Catholic Church. Yet just a few years ago Ehrlich stated that 'the pope and many of the bishops are one of the truly evil, regressive forces on the planet' because of the Church's opposition to contraception. Ehrlich has changed none of his positions in that time."

"For our part" stated Virginia Coda Nunziante of Famiglia Domani "we will continue to speak out against the evil and the errors that have found their way into the temple of God, asking Our Lady to lead us and all the faithful, in this dark hour of the Church's history."
